The five leading causes of fatal vehicle crashes in Texas are:
1. Driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol.
2. Driving at an unsafe speed, such as under the limit or in unsafe conditions.
3. Speeding over the limit.
4. Failure to yield the right-of-way.
5. Wrong side of the road (not just from passing).
The economic loss from traffic collisions in Texas is over 9 billion dollars a year.
ALCOHOL IS INVOLVED IN APPROXIMATELY 40% OF ALL TRAFFIC FATALITIES. ONLY 15% ARE DUE TO VEHICLE FAILURE / ENVIRONMENT, AND THE OTHER 85% CAN, IN SOME WAYS, BE TRACED TO DRIVER ERROR.
Some tips to compensate for the mistakes of others and avoid common driving errors:
Leave yourself an out
1. A pedestrian, a child, or a youngster on a bike may run into the street in front of you. Always expect the unexpected.
2. The car in front of you may have a blow-out or lose a wheel, so be prepared.
3. The truck in front of you may suddenly jackknife, or a cap may fall off from one of its tires.
|
| Get the big picture
1. Control your sides.
2. Always know what or who is in your blind spot.
3. Don't drive in someone else's blind spot.
4. Control tailgaters: Change lanes or slow down. In low-speed environments such as the city, tap your brakes just enough to make the brake lights come on.

Section 1, Course Policies and Procedures and a Message from the
Texas Education Agency
The benefits of taking this Defensive Driving Course:
Ticket Dismissal:
Stop the traffic violation from reaching your driving record.
Some municipal court judges and justices of the peace require you to contact the court before you take the driving safety course for purposes of ticket dismissal. By contacting the court that is indicated on your traffic ticket, you may prevent delays or added expenses.
Texas state law allows you to dismiss one traffic ticket per year (certain restrictions apply) by taking a driver safety class.
Your course completion certificate will dismiss ONE traffic violation, and the course must be taken AFTER the violation.
If you take a driving safety class purely for education or to receive an insurance discount, and later you receive a traffic ticket, you are permitted to take another driving safety class to dismiss the ticket if you haven't done so within 12 months.
Your certificate will normally be mailed to you by First Class Mail in 1 to 3 weeks after you complete the course, so you'll need to take the course well ahead of the deadline imposed by the court.
It is recommended that you either hand-carry your "Court" certificate to the court or send it to the court via certified mail so as to ensure that it arrives by the date previously established by the court. Note: It must be delivered or mailed by you to the court. 6HourDefensiveDriving.com is not permitted to mail it to the court on your behalf.
A reduction on your automotive insurance:
The envelope that you receive after completion of this course will actually contain two certificates: one for the court, and the other for your insurance agent. We suggest that you make a copy of the insurance certificate in case you change insurance companies because the 10% insurance discount is valid for 3 years even if you switch insurance companies.
The 10% vehicle insurance discount is valid with all Texas insurance companies except (possibly) county mutuals, regardless of the reason that you took the course; i.e., pure education, insurance discount, or ticket dismissal.
Course Details and Orientation:
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
All students of 6HourDefensiveDriving.com must complete each of the course's sections AND the final exam in order to receive a completion certificate. No sections may be skipped or bypassed. 6HourDefensiveDriving.com will not issue certificates of completion if the participant has not successfully passed all sections, including the final exam.
THE TESTING PROCEDURE
You must score 70% or better on the final exam in order to receive a certificate of completion. You may take the final exam three times to achieve the 70% score. After a third failure, you can retake the course by registering again, but you will need to pay new course costs.
The course only allows a total of four (4) incorrect security questions and four (4) incorrect course questions. Upon your 5th failure of either the security questions or course questions, you will be expelled from the program and you will need to re-enroll, start from the beginning of the course and pay a reinstatement fee.
VERIFICATION OF STUDENT IDENTITY
Upon registration, you will verify under penalty of perjury that you alone will be participating in the course without any outside assistance. At no time will course credit be issued if you (the student) receive any help whatsoever. After enrollment, you will answer numerous security questions that will be used to verify your identity throughout the course. You will be disqualified from the course for attempting to circumvent the time requirements, logging in with false information, participating in the course while other browser windows are open, or utilizing other reading materials not contained in the course during testing. Disqualifications of any kind may be reversed at the school's discretion. Any attempts to circumvent the program will waive all your rights to a refund of course tuition. PLEASE NOTE: Attempting to obtain an official State of Texas completion certificate in a fraudulent, incorrect manner or by means of false information is a crime punishable by a maximum of two to ten years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
THIRD PARTY STUDENT VERIFICATION PROCESS
In order to participate in our program, we must verify your identity through a third party. This verification enables our program to positively identify you randomly throughout the program with information pertaining to your driver’s license and your current vehicle registration, as well as other forms of third party data. A negative verification will result in a delay of access to our program since we cannot confirm your identification. If our third party database cannot verify your identity, you will need to fill out and notarize a student affidavit and fax it to our office.
CANCELLATIONS
The 6HourDefensiveDriving.com course may be canceled at any time, assuming that you have not already paid for the course or have not participated in any part of the program. If payment has already been received, you must cancel the enrollment before midnight of the third day after registration in order to receive a refund (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.) If you have completed the course or failed the final exam, cancellations will not be accepted. Attempting to circumvent the security systems or disqualification will also not warrant a refund. A refund of course fees will be granted due to any of the following cases: verifiable system failures at any time on the part of 6HourDefensiveDriving.com; course discontinuation on the part of the school; enrollment made as a result of any misrepresentation in advertising, promotional materials, or statements made by the owner or an employee of the school; or your inability to understand how to participate in the course.
COMPLETION CERTIFICATES
Two certificates of completion will be issued by 6HourDefensiveDriving.com once you have completed the program. All defensive driving courses are required by law to mail certificates of completion to the actual student completing the course. Certificates must be mailed no later than the 15th working day (or the 21st calendar day) after the date of course completion. The certificates will be mailed in a standard form produced by the Texas Education Agency.
The certificate labeled "Court" is used for ticket dismissal and should be submitted to the court. The certificate labeled "Insurance" can be presented to your insurance company for a premium discount on your automobile policy (any insurance discounts are up to company policies for actual credit.) Ask your insurance carrier for discount information. NOTE: You will not be graduated from our program unless your payment and/or affidavit have been received.
COURSE EVALUATION
6HourDefensiveDriving.com is committed to offering a quality, educational and accurate defensive driving program. Once you have passed the final examination and the program, we will ask you to fill out a short evaluation about the program to let us know what you thought. Your input is extremely important to us. Thank you for your assistance.
"A Message
for Texas Drivers"
An Introduction to the Course by the Texas Education Agency (T.E.A.)
The Texas Driver and Traffic Safety Education Act was written by our legislators. The law exists because traffic crashes in Texas annually take the lives of thousands of people and cause billions in economic losses. These alarming facts make safe driving a concern for all citizens of our State. Deaths, injuries, and property damage have to be reduced. Attitudes and skills of drivers must be improved through effective driving safety programs. It is extremely important that the citizens of this State identify and implement all reasonable means to reduce human suffering and property loss that results from vehicle crashes.
The law requires that all driving safety courses cost a minimum of $25.00 and be six hours in length in order to dismiss a traffic violation. You will be signing a statement on your certificate of completion that you have completed the entire six-hour traffic safety course. If you sign this statement fraudulently, you could be charged with tampering with a government document, and the penalty is two to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Also, the law states the definition of a driving safety course is a course of instruction intended to improve a driver's knowledge, perception, and attitudes about driving. If you leave believing this course did not provide you with accurate, adequate information for you to improve your knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes, you need to inform the T.E.A. The T.E.A., in cooperation with the Department of Public Safety, is charged with overseeing these courses of instruction.
During the course, you will be asked to complete a student information registration form. It is important that you correctly input all the information on this form because this will be used to print and mail your certificate to you. Be sure you provide your complete current mailing address, which may not necessarily be the same as the one on your driver’s license. If anything is missing or completed inaccurately, your certificate may be lost in the mail. For instance, if you leave off your apartment number or zip code, the post office may not deliver the certificate. Also, if you are having the certificate sent to an address other than your own, and you do not indicate "in care of", the post office may not deliver the certificate. The certificate must be mailed to you and not to the court. DO NOT fill in the court's address as the mailing address of the certificate. You will, however, need to fill in the name of the court where the certificate will be submitted. The court information is very important and will be printed on the certificate. Please be accurate and specific. Writing in "J.P." or "municipal" is not sufficient. You must write in the name of the judge, Justice of the Peace, or a city municipal court exactly as it appears on your traffic citation. If you try to guess and get it wrong, the court may not accept the certificate, and you may be required to re-take the course and incur additional expenses. So please make sure your information is correct. Also, pay close attention to the date the court gave to you for submission of your completion certificate, and abide by that date so you don't end up with a warrant for your arrest. NOTE: If any of the information you have filled in on your registration form is not accurate, contact our office immediately so we can correct it.
Your certificate of course completion will not be given to you immediately at the end of this course. It will be mailed to you within 21 calendar days from the date that you completed the course, unless you arrange for earlier delivery. The certificate you get in the mail will look like a white square of computer printer paper with computer printing on top and attached layers. It will be in two parts. Open it carefully, and make sure to retain both your court and insurance copies. If you do not receive your certificate after 15 days or accidentally misplace it, call 866-52-TEXAS or contact the T.E.A. in Austin to request a duplicate. Remember, the court needs the course completion certificate that you receive in the mail, not your receipt for the course.
As a final note, if you observe fraudulent activity occurring, such as the selling of certificates or early dismissal of a driving safety class, and you report it to the T.E.A., you could receive a reward of up to $500. In order to be eligible for the reward, you must supply enough information for T.E.A. to initiate an investigation that leads to the revocation of an instructor or school’s license or a criminal conviction.
Remember, by working together to change our perceptions, attitudes, and skills, we can make Texas roads and highways a safer place to drive.
